Wild Mage (Mage Kit)¶
Wild Mages are wizards who specialize in the study of wild magic — extremely unpredictable, and to be used with caution. They have access to spells that protect themselves from wild magic and bend it to their wills.
Advantages¶
- Every time a Wild Mage casts a spell there is a 5% chance that the spell explodes into a wild surge — some entirely random magical effect. Higher rolls on the wild surge table are usually better than lower rolls.
- A Wild Mage's casting level varies slightly every time they cast a spell — between five levels lower and five levels higher than their true level.
- Three spells are available only to the Wild Mage:
- Chaos Shield
- Improved Chaos Shield
- Nahal's Reckless Dweomer — cast any spell from the spellbook at the cost of a random-result wild surge.
Disadvantages¶
- Wild surges can backfire spectacularly — fireballs hitting the caster, polymorphs into squirrels, summons appearing as hostile creatures, etc.
When to pick it¶
- A unique high-risk, high-reward playstyle. Nahal's Reckless Dweomer is the only way to access any spell at any time — invaluable in emergencies.
- See the appendix wild-surge table in Tables for the full list of possible effects.
The wild mages I have met exhibit a startling disregard for common sense, and are often meddling with powers far beyond their own control.

Not unlike a certain travelogue author with whom I am unfortunately acquainted.
