Missile Weapons

Missile weapons that don't fall under Bows. These are the only ranged options open to most non-archer classes and are subject to the standard Rate of Fire rules.

Crossbow

A bow mounted crosswise on a wooden or metal stock. The crossbow fires a quarrel (also called a bolt). Slower rate of fire than a regular bow but easier to use under cover.

Quarrel

A quarrel — also called a bolt — is the ammunition fired by crossbows regardless of the weapon's size.

Sling

A leather or fabric strap with a pouch for holding a missile. Held by both ends, twirled around the wielder's head, and released by letting go of one end. Halflings get a –1 THAC0 bonus with slings.

Bullet

A pellet of hardened clay or lead cast specifically as ammunition for a sling.

Dart

A small missile weapon thrown rather than fired from a launcher. Darts have the highest rate of fire of any missile weapon — three per round.

Throwing Dagger

Similar to a dagger but balanced for throwing. Characters proficient with daggers are also proficient with throwing daggers — no extra slot required.
