Dwarf

Dwarves are short and stocky, easily identifiable by their size and shape. They have ruddy cheeks, dark eyes, and dark hair. Dwarves tend to be dour and taciturn; they work hard and care little for most humor. They enjoy beer, ale, and mead — but most of all, they love gold.

In the Realms there are four dwarven sub-races: shield dwarves, gold dwarves, wild dwarves, and duergar.

Traits

  • +1 Constitution, –1 Dexterity, –2 Charisma.
  • +2 bonus to Saving Throws vs. Paralysis/Poison/Death, Rod/Staff/Wand, and Spell — with additional bonuses based on Constitution.
  • Infravision.
  • Thieving bonuses: +15% Pick Pockets, +20% Open Locks, +20% Find Traps, +5% Move Silently, +10% Hide in Shadows, +5% Detect Illusion, +10% Set Traps.

Strengths

  • One of the toughest races — save bonuses stack with Constitution for near-immunity to many wand and spell effects.
  • The only race that can take the Dwarven Defender Fighter kit.

Weaknesses

  • Dexterity and Charisma penalties hurt missile/AC and party-leader roles.
  • Not permitted in some spellcasting classes.
