Shields

Unlike armor, shields apply a static modifier to the wearer's existing Armor Class. Some shields offer a different bonus against missile weapons, which is used instead of the normal AC bonus when the incoming attack is ranged.

AC bonuses

Shield type AC bonus vs. Missile
Buckler +1 +0
Small Shield +1 +0
Medium Shield +1 +1
Large Shield +1 +2

For Sword and Shield Style proficiency bonuses, see Proficiencies → Sword and Shield Style.

Descriptions

Buckler

Bucklers are slightly smaller versions of shields. Unlike other shields, bucklers can be used by Thieves and Bards.

Small Shield

Usually round and carried on the forearm, gripped with the shield hand. Light enough that the user can carry other items in that hand — but cannot wield or carry another weapon.

Medium Shield

Carried in the same manner as a small shield. Usually metal, ranges from 3 to 4 feet in diameter, and can be any shape (round, square, triangular). A typical medium shield resembles a downward-pointing triangle.

Large Shield

Also known as the kite or tower shield — a massive metal or wooden shield reaching nearly from the user's chin to toe. It must be firmly fastened to the forearm, and the shield hand must firmly grip it at all times.
