Dwarf

Dwarves are short, stocky folk — easily identifiable by their size, shape, ruddy cheeks, dark eyes, and dark hair. They are dour, taciturn, hard-working, and exceptionally fond of beer, ale, mead, and most of all, gold.

Four racial divisions exist within the Realms: shield dwarves, gold dwarves, wild dwarves, and duergar.

Traits

  • +1 Constitution, –1 Dexterity, –2 Charisma.
  • +2 bonus to saving throws vs. paralysis/poison/death, rod/staff/wand, and spells.
  • Additional saving-throw bonuses based on Constitution.
  • Infravision — see warm bodies as red shapes in darkness.
  • Thieving skill bonuses: +15% Pick Pockets, +20% Open Locks, +20% Find Traps, +10% Move Silently, +5% Hide in Shadows, +5% Detect Illusion, +10% Set Traps.

Strengths

  • Saves are excellent — the best in the game against most magical effects.
  • High Constitution makes dwarven Fighters and Defenders enormously durable.
  • Innate infravision.

Weaknesses

  • Lower Dexterity hurts both AC and missile to-hit.
  • Penalty to Charisma reduces leadership and shop prices.
  • Class options are restricted compared with humans.
