Shields

Four shield sizes are catalogued in the BG2:EE manual, from largest to smallest. All shields grant a +1 AC bonus; the larger sizes add a further bonus against missile fire.

For the bonuses a character can earn from the Sword and Shield Style see Proficiencies.

Large Shield

+1 AC (+2 vs. missile).

Also known as the kite or tower shield. This massive metal or wooden shield reaches nearly from the chin to the toe of the user. It must be firmly fastened to the forearm, and the shield hand must firmly grip it at all times.

Medium Shield

+1 AC.

Carried in the same manner as a small shield. Medium shields are usually made of metal, range from 3–4 feet in diameter, and can be of any shape — round, square, or a spread dragon's wings. A typical medieval shield resembles a triangle with one point facing downward.

Small Shield

+1 AC (+0 vs. missile).

Usually round, carried on the forearm and gripped with the shield hand. Its light weight (compared to a medium shield) lets the user carry other items in that hand — though he cannot wield or carry another weapon.

Buckler

+1 AC (+0 vs. missile).

A slightly smaller version of the small shield. Unlike other shields, bucklers can be used by Thieves.

Class restrictions on shields

Druids and Bards can equip only Bucklers. Thieves can equip only Bucklers. Mages, Sorcerers, and Monks cannot equip any shield. Other classes can use any shield.
