Wild Mage (Mage Kit)

Wild Mages are wizards who specialize in the study of wild magic — characterized by powerful and dangerous surges of unpredictable magic. They have access to spells protecting them from wild magic and bend it to their wills.

Every time a Wild Mage casts a spell, there is a 5% chance the spell explodes in a wild surge. A wild surge produces random magical effects — a percent chance is rolled to determine the effect, with higher rolls usually better than lower ones. A Wild Mage's casting level also varies slightly whenever they cast a spell — anywhere between five levels lower or higher than the Wild Mage's true level.

The full wild-surge results table is reproduced under Progression → Tables → Wild Surge.

Advantages

  • Access to all eight schools of magic (no opposition school).
  • Three unique spells exclusive to the Wild Mage:
    • Nahal's Reckless Dweomer — must be scribed manually
    • Chaos Shield — added to spellbook for free
    • Improved Chaos Shield — added to spellbook for free

Disadvantages

  • 5% wild surge chance on every cast — sometimes catastrophic.
  • Caster level varies ±5 randomly on each cast, affecting spell range, damage, and duration.

When to pick it

  • Wild Mages thrive on chaos — Nahal's Reckless Dweomer can cast spells you don't even know.
  • The variable casting level is more often a benefit than a curse — many surges produce powerful side effects.
